Cases of flulike illnesses up across Virginia

Thursday, 24 Feb 2011

RICHMOND, Va. - Health officials say cases of flu and flulike illnesses are up across Virginia.

State figures show that three of the five health regions saw rising percentages of outpatient visits for flulike illnesses for the week of Feb. 12.

Dr. Harry Gewanter with Pediatric & Adolescent Health Partners told The Richmond Times-Dispatch that many patients have tested positive for the flu.

The latest state flu-surveillance report says about 40 percent of flu cases is an A(H3) strain. Other strains include B and the 2009 A(H1N1). There also are A cases that haven't been subtyped for strain.

Jim Farrell with the Virginia Department of Health says he doesn't think the flu in the state has peaked yet.
