Hazelwood Central student dead from swine flu, family says

Students and teachers at Hazelwood Central High School are mourning the loss of a freshman student.

Family members say 14-year-old Asia Conley died of swine flu or H1N1.

On Thursday afternoon, the district said it did not have a confirmed cause of death, but early Thursday evening Conley's family told NewsChannel 5 doctors told them it was H1N1.

Kim Conley, Asia's mother, says her daughter was perfectly healthy a week ago Wednesday -- running a mile at school that day.

That Wednesday night, family members say, Asia Conley came down with a fever. By that Thursday, the family says she was admitted to Children's Hospital -- diagnosed with H1N1.

The hospital says Asia Conley died this Tuesday.

The family of Asia Conley says they are upset that this information is not being passed on to parents to help prevent more cases of swine flu
.

The Hazelwood School District says it is in constant contact with the County Health Department and has an H1N1 plan in action -- sanitizing the school rooms and telling students and staff to wash their hands. The school will also send a letter home to parents about the precautions. The letter may also explain Asia's death in more detail.

We've had this twice in our home now, once in April/May and the past 3 weeks.  Yes, I said for the past 3 weeks.  Only our dr. is too stupid to realize what my 17 yo daughter has and refuses to even test for flu.

3 weeks ago the school sent home a letter stating we had a confirmed case in the school.  Friday night my oldest started out with a sore throat and headache.  Sat. morning my husband started the same symptoms.  By now the daughter was running 99-100 degree temp nothing major but enough that she couldn't stop shivering.  Then she started coughing and runny nose.

I quarrantined both of them in our RV Sat. morning and started meds in earnest.  By Mon. neither was better but they weren't worse, so I made a dr. appointment for them and the youngest son who was also now sick.  Our dr. told them that the fact that they could walk into his office proved they didn't have the flu so he wouldn't test.  Gave my husband a diagnoses of sinus infection and none for the children but gave all 3 a script for Z-pack.  Husband finished his and seems to have returned to normal, youngest son had a lingering headache and some slight coughing.

The 17 yo developed tightness in her chest, difficulty taking deep breaths and would be winded walking 40 feet.  Back to the dr. she went last week to make sure she wasn't developing secondary pneumonia, again because she walked in here it's not serious, and she can return to school after the appointment.  The child couldn't even walk from the car to the door of the dr. office without gasping for breath and he says she can return to class!

Needless to say we have since switched drs. and I have been treating her with alternative medicines with good outcome.  She still has no appetite and has lost about 15 pounds in the 3 weeks she's had this but I hope we have finally turned a corner and she should begin to get better.

The school's response to this has been appalling, there are normally about 18 students per class in our high school and my middle daughter tells me that each of her classes is missing 5 or 6.  The parking lot is about  a quarter empty and there is no trouble finding a spot like usual, only Jr. and Sr. are allowed to drive to school.  Our school district has a policy where if you miss more than 6 days, even if you have a dr. note, you get zeros for all your classes until you go to night school so even though we pick up school work and it's returned finished the children still get zeros for all work, that means a lot of people send their children to school sick.  Now, they are acting like we never had H1N1.

After dealing with this for 3 weeks, I feel like we are on our own to protect our families the schools only spread it and the drs. don't seem to realize this flu isn't presenting with "normal" flu symptoms so they don't know how to treat it.

The way you were treated by your doctor is appauling(sp?).  That was very unprofessional seeing as how you all met the criteria for swine flu.  I don't know why doctors have a problem with being honest about swine flu.  If you have it, you have it.  It's the dominant flu.  There was no sinus infection or cold or whatever, it was swine flu.  Hope you all are okay.  When the worried well go to the doctors that's one thing, but when you are honestly sick and have all the symptoms of swine flu, it should be acknowledged.  At least you were given prophylactic antibiotics to cover any potential infection as a result of the flu; however, you can get viral pneumonia from swine flu and that can't be treated wtih antibiotics because antibiotics are for bacterial infections and not viral infections.

Anyway, glad you changed doctors and if you have to keep changing until you find one you feel comfortable with.  Hang in there! Smile
