Hospital Sees Dramatic Drop In H1N1 Cases

Backus Hospital Lifts Some Restrictions

POSTED: 3:28 pm EST December 1, 2009
UPDATED: 3:43 pm EST December 1, 2009

NORWICH, Conn. -- Officials at Backus Hospital in Norwich say they have seen a dramatic drop in H1N1 cases.

H1N1 activity appears to have peaked in some places and is easing off but health experts said people should not let their guard down.

Officials said on Nov. 1 there were 35 people with H1N1 and on Nov. 23 there were only four.

Dr. David Kalla said the hospital is not far enough out of the woods to ease all restrictions. He said that visitors to patients must be at least 18 years-old and be free of flu-like symptoms such as a fever or sore throat.

The VNA of Southeastern CT has announced it has an additional 600 doses of seasonal flu vaccine, thanks to a donation from the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe.
The Visiting Nurse Association will offer seasonal flu shots at a cost of $16 to cover the administrative costs. Medicare and most insurances will be accepted for the administration fee.
Seasonal flu shots will be available at the H1N1 Clinic, along with H1N1 immunizations, from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Ledyard High School and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the VNASC office in Waterford.
The VNASC will also hold two seasonal flu-only clinics: from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday Feb. 9 and from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday Feb. 11 at the VNASC office.
