24-year-old Mo. woman dies of swine flu; 2nd death in Missouri linked to the illness

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) — Missouri has recorded its second swine flu death, and the first in the western part of the state.

State health officials say a 24-year-old Independence woman died Wednesday night, several days after she was hospitalized with symptoms including diarrhea, coughing and extreme fatigue. Her name was not released.

The Department of Health and Senior Services announced the death on Thursday evening.

Neither the state nor Independence health director Larry Jones would identify the woman.

Jones said the woman had no other pre-existing conditions or illnesses, as has been the case with many swine flu-related deaths elsewhere.

In May, a 44-year-old St. Louis County man who had been diagnosed with swine flu after traveling to Mexico died at a St. Louis-area hospital.
