Hands-Off Plan: Schools Ban Touching To Fight H1N1Glen Cove District Students Urged To Have No Skin-On-Skin Contact With Swine Flu Outbreak LoomingParents Told To Provide Kids With Tissues, Hand Sanitizer, Ibuprofen
Reporting
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
Jennifer McLogan
Chest bumps. High fives. Hugs and handshakes. Glen Cove Middle School students Ali Slaughter and Hannah Seltzer say that's what friends do on the first day of school. But when students in the Nassau community return to school next week, the superintendent will be urging abstinence. Everyone from the tiniest tots to the biggest high school football players will be asked to limit skin-on-skin contact in an attempt to prevent the spread of swine flu when it re-emerges this fall. "It will [be hard] because you really like your friends and you didn't get to see them," Seltzer tells CBS 2. Glen Cove high schooler Erica Cohen is on the soccer team, but says she knows even in a game that involves close physical content, she'll have to be as careful as she can be. "I don't really think it's such a big deal, if you wash your hands after -- I think it's just you really can't avoid it," she says. Lorena Galo filled out her health form and decided she can't give up hugging. "We're still going to hug either way," she says. The policy is unorthodox and could be difficult to enforce, but Nassau Health Commissioner Dr. Maria Torroella Carney says it's a good way to educate awareness. "Many people are trying to think outside of the box, creatively, how to minimize spread of the illness, how to protect others, and I applaud that thinking," she says. Glen Cove parent Leonard Imperial thinks no touching is an overreaction. "Unfortunately people get sick with flu and die every year, but I don't think this one is any different or particular that we have to worry about," he says. But Parent Angela Hamel is already urging her sons follow the new guidelines. "The high fives, I think just to cut down on transmission, it's probably good idea," she says. "I think it's a good way to prevent." And many other parents seem to agree. "Less contact would mean less germs and less illnesses and I think it's a good recommendation," says Donna Sita. While they fear the spread of swine flu, health officials say they are more concerned about the possibility of widespread anxiety or panic when school begins. Officials are asking families to have tissues, ibuprofen and hand sanitizers on hand for students. School superintendants are gathering Thursday on Long Island to discuss prevention and address other concerns CBS 2's Dr. Holly Phillips is weighing in on the swine flu preparations in Nassau County. She says she think officials are doing the right thing in pushing H1N1 education, but she says there are many other ways to get the virus besides touching one another. "Hysteria should be avoided, but it's good that the school district is emphasizing keeping kids safe. Not touching won't prevent transmission. The virus can live on surfaces and be transmitted via coughs and sneezes," she says. So why is talk of the swine flu cropping up again, and when will it hit its peak? "It never left, but like the seasonal flu, we're expecting it to pick up in October and hit its peak during the winter months when we're closed inside and the illness is more easily transmitted," Phillips says. "The Center for Disease Control is expecting between 30 and 50 percent of Americans will be affected by it." As for the swine flu vaccine, Phillips says it should be out by mid-October, but at that time there will not be enough for everyone. She expects by the end of the year there will be 200 million doses available. In the meantime, there are steps people can take to protect their families. "Stay home if you're sick. Wash your hands," says Phillips. "Get to the doctor early with symptoms because anti-viral medications can shorten the course of the illness." |

I think we need to be reinforcing hand washing, I'm not sure why you would want kids administering ibuprofen? I will remind my children to not hang all over each other, and I certainly think teachers in the class should discourage all the unnecessary touching, as they are there with the children. The only way to stop the spread is to isolate the kids that are ill from class, and pass some sort of resolution that gives teaches more rights to refuse entry to the classroom.

I don't think the kids would be administering the Ibuprofen. The parents normally provide Ibuprofen to the school office for the office staff to administer to their child. At least that's what happens at our school. Parent provides the meds, the meds stay in the office until time to administer them.

At my son's middle school there a zero tolerance for OTC meds, he'd be sent home if "caught" with ibuprofen. As Penham said, if a child needed meds of any kind it has to go through the school nurse. I don't really see the point in having the ibuprofen anyway, it'd only mask a fever and possibly keep a parent or teacher from realizing sickness asap, unless the child spoke up? Ibuprofen is a treatment not a preventative. |

If they have a fever they shouldn't be at school anyway. So they only thing Ibuprofen should be used for as school is for a headache (in my opinion) or if they are recovering from something else like a broken bone or sprain something for imflamation. Nothing flu or fever related.

No skin to skin contact between high school kids? - and in 2009?
Are these the same schools that have nursery schools for
the babies of babys?
Is sharing bongs still OK?
This plan is doomed.

I agree...frequent hand washing or sanitizer for students. Sneezing the correct way in one's sleeve. No drinking from the same water container/utencils/or chewing on pen caps or pencils.
According to the CDC Guidelines for schools, door handles should be cleaned several times a day and more frequent table washing.
I guess, who is going to do all this in schools. Most cutodians are already maxed out with their general work.

Kids will be kids. Mine are 7 and 10. We've talked about pandemic in general for over 2 years. I've been telling them not to touch everything they see...they are pretty good but they can't help it...they "touch".
For example today, my girl got something stuck in her tooth and of course she went in with her hands to dig it out after she touched counter at the restaraunt and my boy tonight digging for "gold" because he had an "itch"...after all I've taught them. They have even gotten sick with the flu recently.
Kids forget. They just can't help it. Keep reminding your kids but I don't know how well it is really going to help.
They can wipe down all they want in schools...as soon as they do a kid comes along and runs his hands along something "after" he had just stuck his hands in his nose or mouth or touched something else along the way. All that wiping makes us feel better but it lasts about 2 seconds until next kid comes along.

I think it will be next to impossible to enforce some of these rules. My 13 year old plays fastpitch softball, basketball and she's a cheerleader. Even though softball and basketball are not contact sports that softball has been everywhere. For softball she's the starting pitcher, so she touches that ball, before and after everyone on every play and they run each other over and slide into each other, they definately have alot of contact. Same with basketball when it starts, they are bumping into each other knocking each other down, falling on people. Same with cheer, how do they think they make those pyramids with the people stacked on top? They have to touch each other to get that way. It's just constant contact. Then there's standing in the lunch line, riding on the bus to games. It would just be so much easier to close school than to try to enforce something like this.

I've talked to my son's teacher about SF. She said they would use hand sanitizer before lunch. The TA said their not. I send hand sanitizer to school with my son. He uses them about half the time. (Unless he just throws them away the other half.) Kids will be kids. Close the schools!

It wasn't done in 1957 or 1968.
Have you considered the results of this - Are the ends worth the means?

I know, I plan on pulling her out of school as soon as there is any type of outbreak near us. So far OK has been having some clusters, but not near us, but I can't imagine that it is too far off. We are ready to homeschool if we need to. I was just hoping the schools will do the "responsible thing" but I doubt it.

I understand your concern. It's a tough call. Do you plan to isolate your kids and yourself from the world if someone nearby gets sick?
Kids who are not in school will congregate somewhere.
If this virus changes and causes H5N1 severe symptoms with
resulting high CFR, I'll go to hole-up mode..
